Hey everyone, Matt here from Kooler Garage Doors. I wanted to touch base on a topic that often doesn’t get the attention it deserves—garage security. When you think about it, your garage isn’t just for parking cars. It’s the largest entry point into your home, and it’s where we store a lot of valuable stuff, from bikes to tools, even family heirlooms. Here are five practical ways to secure your garage and make it a reliable fortress for your home.
1. Upgrade Your Door’s Motor and Locking System
A strong, reliable motor with built-in security features is step one. Think of it as the engine that powers your garage’s defense system. These days, we have motors with WiFi connectivity, so you can monitor and control your garage door remotely. Imagine being able to check if your garage door is closed (or left open) from anywhere—and locking it with a quick tap on your phone if it’s not. At Kooler, we’ve put together options that combine powerful motors with smart locks, helping you bring your garage up to today’s security standards. ANd it’s not just about wifi and remote access.
Check out this lock.
This tiny looking lock is part of Kooler’s Standard. And this thing adds the force of a guerrilla in holding your system closed. Thats 3,000 Newtons!
It’s not often that garage doors are force open – but when they are, the force overrides the closing force of openers. Which will not happen with this!
Add remote access to gain security. And add the force of a guerrilla to know your system will not be forced open.
2. Use Motion-Activated Lighting Inside and Out
Darkness can be an open invitation to unwanted visitors. Motion-activated lights not only make your life easier when you’re heading in and out but also deter intruders. Bright exterior lighting near your garage and entry points keeps things visible and secure, while interior lights that activate on entry give you instant visibility. We suggest setting up sensors around your garage door and other entrances for that extra layer of protection. It’s a small investment that makes a big impact.
Many new operator machines have motion sensor lighting that will trigger the interior machine lights on when motion is sensed. This is an awesome feature for moving trash out at night – or finding your car in the garage. And it’s also a great security feature to light up the space if there was a curious intruder.
3. Secure Windows and Install Frosted Glass
Windows are great for natural light, but they also provide an easy view into your garage. A smart move here is to upgrade to frosted or tinted glass, which keeps prying eyes out while letting light in. Reinforce those window locks, too, and make sure they’re properly installed—fewer access points mean fewer risks.
Several options exist with window pane tints. We can offer obscure glass that will allow natural light in but no visibility along with different tints and mirroring. All offer another layer of enclosure. If the natural light and clear view is the true desire – we recommend keeping windows at the top of the door to limit the visibility into your spaces.
Satin, Black Satin, Dark Tint and Obscure window panes are the primary options when exploring garage door windows – and others exist as well.
4. Install a Door Sensor with Your Garage Door Opener
Adding a door sensor allows you to track your garage’s status in real time. If the door opens unexpectedly, you’ll get an alert. Combined with Kooler’s diagnostic service packages, you can keep your sensors and opener functioning optimally. This minimizes the chance of malfunctions and makes it harder for any surprise access.
There are more and more options in this space with regards to automations. From cameras on keypads to alerts on your phone – gaining a connection to see what’s going on immediately as it does is a reality today.
5. Regular Maintenance and Inspection
The best way to defend your garage is through regular maintenance. A garage door is a complex system with parts that wear out over time—cables, springs, sensors, you name it. Scheduling a Kooler Motorized Door Assessment (MDA) gives you a heads-up on potential weaknesses before they become security risks. A well-maintained door is not only safer but also harder to tamper with. Plus, if anything ever feels off, you know you’ve got a trusted team to call.
At Kooler, our promise is simple: a quick response from soemone you can trust. Let’s keep your garage secure so you can enjoy peace of mind, whether you’re home or miles away.
